Preventing Hair Loss With Anti-Androgens

The term hair loss or “alopecia” is taken from the Greek word meaning fox and originates from the fact that foxes shed their coats two times a year. A study done in Australia reveals that the incidence of preventing hair lossmid-frontal hair loss raises as a person age and affects about 57% of women and 73.5% in men over 80 years old and up. Most men at this age find ways on preventing hair loss.

One cause of hair loss is when male or female hormones known as androgens and estrogens reach an imbalance. And correcting this hormonal imbalance may stop hair loss. Hypothyroidism can also cause hair loss especially in the outer third of the eyebrows.

Although hair loss is very common and an inescapable fact of life that we encounter as we age, proper hair care and treatment can help prevent it. Many hair loss treatments including topical or surgical procedures are readily available for anyone experiencing this problem.

There are many ways to stop and prevent hair loss, but this can take time and daily effort. For people who are really serious, you can take steps in preventing hair loss with anti-androgens. This though may not have entered your mind before, but this process is an effective way in preventing hair loss and get that beautiful crowning glory back.

What are anti-androgens?

Anti-androgens are considered as a powerful method to combat hair loss in men. This treatment is based on the belief that anti-androgen works to stop DHT from binding to the androgen receptor. According to studies, androgens come in about three fourths of the process that leads to hair loss and as they come to rescue, they intercept the process before certain damages are caused to hair follicles.

Anti- androgens are also proven to restore the weakened hair follicles.

Here are a few of the most well-known and most marketed anti-androgens that could help you fight hair loss: Revivogen, Spironolactone, Proxiphen, Crinagen and Nizoral and Ketoconazole.

Men suffering from hair loss should consider more popular treatments like Finasteride. This kind of anti-androgen is being sold as proscar, propecia, finpecia, finax, fincar and posteride. The anti-androgen propecia works by preventing the 5-alpha reductase which is an enzyme converting testosterone into something called the dihydrotestosrone. Propecia was initially approved in 1992 and was sold as Proscar and was a treatment mainly used for prostate enlargement. But the study made on 1mg of Finasteride showed hair regrowth in male pattern hair loss which pushed the FDA to approve finasteriede in 1997 as a treatment for male pattern hair loss.

Propecia, a trade name of product of Merck & Co has only 1 mg of finasteride. The patent on propecia had expired on June of 2006 and so FDA allowed a generic formulation of Finasteride containing 5 mg on each tablet. This is not generally prescribed to women and Propecia does not have any effect or help in preventing hair loss on women. Furthermore, it was revealed that Finasteride and Propecia cause birth defects in unborn babies so it was placed in the FDA’s Pregnancy Category as an X. Though it is not harmful for pregnant women if not injested, the pills should still be avoided at all cost especially if it is crushed or broken.

Preventing hair loss with anti-androgens can really be effective – for men, but women can still find other possible ways to treat hair loss and thinning hair.
